Asrebeb Yalew, 22, has suffered from a fistula for 6 years after a prolonged, obstructed birth that resulted in a hole between vagina and bladder and vagina and rectum. Her baby was stillborn. Her husband left her because of her incontinence. As she felt ashamed, she tried to move and eat as less as possible and stayed in a foetal position in her mother's hut for six years. When she was finally brought to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, she only weighed 22 kg, the muscles in her legs were atrophied. Her birth injury was operated successfully, she had to have 13 operations on her legs and now learns to walk again.
