Maternal Mortality. Sierra Leone.
Rugiatu Turay strokes the hair of Isattu Jalloh, 11. The girl is 7 months pregnant and was taken in by Turay who founded a grassroot organization Amazonian Initiative Movement in Lunsar, Sierra Leone. She fights against female genital mutilation and maternal health in the district. The girl was circumcised at the age of 6 and then raped by her uncle. As girls are seen as sexually mature after circumcision, the rate of child marriages is quite high. Often, the bodies of the girls are not yet ready for giving birth. Isattu will deliver via C-section in a local hospital.
