Maternal Mortality. Etiophia.

A woman rests in the Compound of the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Abeba after her operation. Some women live for decades with incontinence after a fistula injury has occurred during obstructed labour, Dr. Catherine Hamlin recalls women of 60 and 70 years of age who only come to the hospital after 40 or even 50 years of suffering. Most women are thrown out of thei r homes but husbands and family - the incontinence is seen as a curse.
The colourful blankets are given to the women together with new clothes on admittance to the hospital.
